In 2015, resource managers across the State of Georgia realized the need to reconnect rivers within the state, allowing for the movement of aquatic organisms as well as humans. Through identifying this need, the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership (SARP) gathered together partners from different sectors in the field and kicked off a Dam Removal Workshop, held by American Rivers. This workshop introduced concepts of dam removal project management, permitting, and funding dam removals and aquatic organism passage projects.
Following this workshop, attendees realized that the buck didn’t stop there. Many were energized, and ready to get to work. It was at that time that the Georgia Aquatic Connectivity Team was born.
Since it’s creation, the ACT has held four in person meetings, and several online meetings. We have developed our own charter, and identified several potential projects to work on in the coming years, as well as assisted in or facilitated the removal of several barriers in the state.
